Reiki - What to expect

What to expect in a Reiki session

We start with a brief consultation and ascertain your aims for the session. You will not be asked to remove any clothing apart from things which could restrict your breathing or comfort, such as shoes, belts or spectacles. Reiki will go through clothing, blankets and even plaster cast if necessary.

Reiki is administered by the hands, placed lightly on or near the body in a sequence of moves spending several minutes in each position. Often I will be drawn to concentrate on certain areas to give Reiki where it is specifically needed. There is no massage or manipulation, healing energy flows to the patient easily and naturally.

You may or may not feel sensations during a Reiki treatment. Some people experience sensations such as heat, coolness, tingling or gentle pulsing under my hands or in other parts of the body, some may see colours, or have an emotional response, indicating that shifts are taking place, allowing harmony to be restored. Some even fall asleep. Benefits reported are feelings of deep relaxation, calm and peace on all levels, pain relief, decreased anxiety, and a sense of well-being. Or you may feel mental clarity and energised. Research has shown that this occurs because the activity of parasympathetic autonomic nervous system in the patient increases significantly. There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki, just the way your body needs it.

Although I often get intuitive messages while giving a Reiki treatment, I do not offer a diagnosis or prognosis. If you are concerned about your symptoms you should always consult a GP.

Treatments usually last 1 hour.

After a Treatment

Most people feel relaxed and at peace after a Reiki Treatment. You may initially feel tired but equally you may feel energised. Reiki can also stir up emotions as part of the healing process, and occasionally people experience what is known as a healing reaction, such as headache or flu-like symptoms, which are usually of short duration and a sign of healing and clearing followed by increased wellbeing. I will always guide you on selfcare and what to expect after a treatment. If you are concerned, I will be here to discuss your concerns or questions.

How Many Treatments Will I Need

This varies from person to person depending on your circumstances. In general most problems take time; healing is a process rather than an event. Acute problems generally heal faster than chronic ones, and may require treating over a longer period of time. We can decide on a course of treatment that suits you and your lifestyle. Often people benefit so much from their treatments, that even after their issue resolves, they will come back on a regular basis to rebalance and enjoy the deep sense of peace and relaxation that Reiki provides.
